Black Meditation
Ten Practices for Self-Care, Mindfulness, and Self-Determination
Black Meditation
Mindfulness has been around for as long as humans have been alive.
But what do we get nowadays with mindfulness? Corporate. Lifeless. Breathless. Anything to maintain the status quo.
We can’t let them strip away the cultural roots, erase the struggle, and offer a version of meditation that doesn’t speak to our reality. Black Meditation changes that!
This book takes the ancient practice of meditation and reconnects it with spiritual development, positive Black racial identity, and psychological liberation.
Have the courage to sit. Take the time to learn about yourself. Recognize your inner capacity for healing.
Here’s what you’ll gain:
- Perspectives from multiple Black meditators from the Montreal area.
- Ten guided practices you can use at home to manage racial stress and tune into ancestral wisdom.
- New perspectives that can deepen your own meditation individually and create change communally.
- A radical perspective about meditation that is informed by decades of clinical experience and research.
Excerpt from the Book
“Racism relates to the traumatic memories of the past. Our countries were founded on violence. The original sins of our country have been passed down to us. We have inherited trauma from our past and replicate it in our present. Because they are revisited so frequently in our present, they end up affecting our perception of the future. Meditation is a way of courageously confronting the present without being overwhelmed by our own thoughts, or the burdens carried by our imperfect societies. We need a meditation that is more than just a white-washed version of the truth. We need a meditation that honestly confronts the inherited trauma of a socially constructed racial hierarchy. And most of all, we need practical tools to get there. Now, more than ever, we need a Black Meditation.” (Page 15)
